Junji Ito - Japanese Manga Horror

I recently stumbled across this artist's work - I am admittedly not a huge Manga fanatic, but I found his stuff cool. Weirdly, when I looked up his bio I learned that he was born in 1963 (the year my mother was born) and had his first story published in 1987 (the year I was born) which I thought was pretty neat.... I like those kind of little things :P

Some of the recurring themes of Ito's work include body horror, seemingly ordinary characters who begin to act out of irrational compulsion, the breakdown of society, deep sea organisms, and the inevitability of one's demise.

Check out some of his work below or find out more here

Serial Killer : DENNIS NILSEN

He strangled his gay lovers in their sleep, chopped up their bodies into 5 pieces and kept parts of them in plastic bags in the drawers of his house - some for as long as 18 months!
He boiled some of the body parts to separate the flesh and bone and flushed bits of the remains down the toilet. He was discovered after neighbouring apartments reported blocked drains and a foul oder coming from the pipes.
As part of their investigation, London police discovered over 2000 fragments of a further 13 victims' remains that had been burned in the back garden of his previous address

This is one fucked up motherfucker!

Cassidy Goodson

This is one of the most disturbing child murder cases I've heard in years. So recent too, usually you hear of these kinds of things happening years and years ago... I can't even fathom what it would be like to be involved in this case. So upsetting.

100 Abandoned Houses - a project by Kevin Bauman

I recently stumbled upon this photography project by Kevin Bauma called 100 Abandoned Houses and it really struck a chord with me. I emailed Kevin and asked him could I feature some of the photos on the blog and fantastically he said yes.
I'm not sure what it is in these photos that resonates with me so strongly. At first I thought they looked pretty creepy and that's why I wanted to feature them on my blog. But since then I have been thinking about these images a lot and it seems there are many more layers to it than just 'they look creepy'. Essentially, I guess, that is what I consider to be great art. Something that makes you think, something that opens your eyes to something new either about yourself or about the world around you, something you can't quite explain and something that makes you want to go back revisit it a second (or third or fourth of fifth) time. They are also incredibly beautiful photos which makes it even more eery for me..

The houses that feature in this photo collection are all from Detroit, the artists home town and a place that has an astonishing 12,000 abandoned residences (that's 138 square miles of abandoned property!) The project started innocently enough as Kevin began photographing some of the abandoned houses as a creative outlet for himself and as a way to try and get to grips with the state of his home town. He built up a huge collection and it soon turned into the 100 Abandoned Houses project, although this is just a drop in the ocean in comparison to how many ghost houses exist in the area!

The population in Detroit has decreased in size from 2,000,000 citizens to less than 800,000 which gives an indication as to why this problem exists and also makes it clear that the problem isn't going to go away any time soon. Looks like these ominous structures are here to stay.

I'm featuring about a third of the pictures from the over all project on my blog here so be sure to check the rest out on his website if you like them.
Take a look at some of the ones that I thought stood out:

Although they are all abandoned houses, there is a lot of difference among them. The feeling off some is almost positive, while others make you think the worst. Many of them have been destroyed in fires and I can't help but wonder if there were people inside at the time. What made people leave these houses? What has gone on inside them since they've been sitting there empty? Who owns them? Will they ever be reborn into loving homes?

I got some perspective on my own reaction to these images due to the fact that I stumbled across them on an architecture website. The way they were presented through that site was like they were all a complete goldmine - a goldmine of information and potential for learning among the upcoming architecture students looking to improve their skills in renovation planning and restructuring! :)

I, on the other hand, was looking at them wondering if people had died inside them and feeling pangs of grief over the notion of 'abandonment' and all it represents, whether it be a house... or a family.

What did these images conjure up for you?

The Ecstasy Of Isabel Mann

So, Halloween is fast approaching and the usual repeat screenings of gory, creepy, horrifying, scary (and some very dodgy) horror movies across cinemas AND the telly has already begun. Like always, we can expect to see many of the old classics like The Shining, The Birds, The Omen and The Exorcist, lumped in with a load of modern day big-budget CGI filled horrors and some creepy kid's classics thrown in for good measure (Hocus Pocus and The Nightmare Before Christmas are two I always look forward to revisiting)
However, at this time I have to say there is one film I am very intrigued to see and I can almost guarantee it won't be on any of your lists yet (maybe for some Irish readers it is, but definitely not for any of you following from abroad)
It's a new Irish horror film which has been made in Dublin called 'The Ecstasy Of Isabel Mann'.

Although it's not due for release until December, the gentle chill that has been creeping back into our mornings coupled with the darkening of these crisp autumnal evenings (and the general Halloween spirit that's about) is leaving me more excited than ever for what lies ahead with this movie! I stumbled upon it by chance when I saw some cool images pop up on my facebook feed. I emailed the person who had uploaded them, Mr. Jason Figgis (I didn't know him personally) and he filled me in on the whole thing.

This was his brief synopsis:
"It's the story of a teenage girl who is seduced into an incredibly violent sect of day-walking vampires. Her class mates start to go missing and two detectives believe that she is the prime suspect. Nothing is quite as it seems for those about her as the disturbed teenager runs amok, killing at will in the woodlands by her home; aided by her vampire guides who are training her in the art of the kill - with horrifically bloody results for those closest to her."

Sounds pretty cool to me! Blood, blood, blood and more blood! Can't really go wrong with that. I've never heard of a Horror movie being made around these parts, unless it was by an American or UK based production company so I find that quite exciting. The words 'Irish' and 'Horror' are two words I thought I'd never be saying in the same sentence and even the fact that I now know that Irish Horror exists is just flippin brilliant!

Here are some images from the making of the movie to whet your appetite:

awesome!
